No, by our own choice, we are not considered a NY
state "Regents School" and therefore can not offer a 'Regents
diploma.' We do, however, facilitate opportunites for families who
desire their enrolled child to take the Regents exam.
We do engage in annual national standardized
testing via the Standford Achievement Test as well as Accelerated
Christian Education diagnostic assessments.
Why not "Regents"? Based upon all available data, The Regents tests and
diploma fall well short of our standards, expectations and
philosophy for education. The Regents are solely
focused on a student's ability to memorize and copy information.
PBCA is committed to ensuring that our students are not only able
to memorize and attain information, but are also able to learn,
process and develop it for themselves. It has been proven and
documented that the Regents exams deal only with selective
information and lacks flexibility, cultural sensitivity, and many
of the foundational facts of our nation's history. We are committed
to a more comprehensive and complete assessment. According to
Regents standards, to pass the exam and graduate high school, a
student need only earn 28 out of 84 points (33%). To earn the
coveted Regents Diploma a student needs only to score 37 out of 84
points (44%). At PBCA, we practice 'mastery-based' learning. This
means that no student may advance from one unit to the next in any
subject without scoring a minimum of 80% on the final unit test. If
they are not able to accomplish this, we work with them
individually until they can. These standards are maintained for
'grade advancement' and graduation.
